Prakash Raj wins National Award

Popular actor hero cum villan Prakash Raj won the coveted Best Actor Award at National Awards. He won the award for his perfomance of a weaver in Kanjivaram, a Tamil film directed by Priyadarshan. Shah Rukh Khan (for Chak De India) and Aamir Khan (for Taare Jameen Par) were in the race but Prakash Raj beat them finally. He has earlier won the best supporting actor award for his film "Iruvar" (or Iddaru in Telugu) in 1998 and a special jury award in 2003.

Kanjivaram has also been chosen as the Best Film for year 2007.

The national awards for year 2007 were announced today (September 7, 2009). The list had been finalized last week but because of the death of Andhra Pradesh chief minister YSR Reddy, the announcement was postponed.

Chak De India has won the award in the wholesome entertainment category and Taare Zameen Par for in the category of Best Family Viewing movie.
